OSI Group’s Increased Efforts in Sustainability

OSI Group is a holding company for the largest foods processor in the world, worth revenues of 6.1 billion dollars and located in 17 countries globally. Their European operations, owned by Baho group, control five different companies which operate in 18 European countries. In Asia, OSI Asia and OSI China control their operations in the Philippines, Taiwan, China and beyond. OSI Group is headed by CEO Sheldon Lavin, COO David McDonald, and CSO Nicole Johnson-Hoffman. Sheldon Lavin was brought on board in 1975 when a young Otto and Sons was in need of a leader who was comfortable with international business; he helped change the name to OSI from Otto and Sons. David McDonald comes to the table with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences and a passion for growing food in Northern Iowa his whole life. And Nicole Johnson-Hoffman is the Chief Sustainability Officer who has recently joined the OSI Group team under the leadership of Mr. McDonald.

Thanks to Johnson-Hoffman’s contributions, OSI Group has made great efforts and won awards related to environmental sustainability. In the United Kingdom, OSI Group won the 2013, 2015, and 2016 awards for sustainability via the Globe of Honour. In the U.S., OSI Riverside won the California Green Business certificate. There have been major improvements in water usage patterns and recycling efforts, there has been an increase in training for Animal Welfare officers in the treatment of poultry and pork, and there has also been a concerted effort to replant trees for forest conservation efforts.

On top of all of this the CEO of OSI, Sheldon Lavin, is a very large philanthropist in his local community of Chicago. He donates greatly to various organizations and is on the Board of Trustees for the Ronald McDonald House. Sheldon Lavin is the Chief Executive Officer of OSI Group, one of the biggest meat processing companies in the world, with a history of more than a century. Sheldon Lavin invests in environmental sustainability practices, and specializes in the financial operations which enable the company to maintain its complex food supply chains. As a result of his leadership and business performance, Sheldon Lavin earned various awards, and has also been recognized for his philanthropic efforts.

According to an interview that Sheldon Lavin gave, after learning in school about the tricks of finance, he wanted to make a different in the world, and became financial consultant in order to reach his goal. He states that he understood role technologies would play in guiding every aspect of the future ever since the beginning of his career. Nowadays, he employs the use of most recent technologies in order to reach as many clients as possible. He takes advantage of social media advertising and Internet marketing, and points out the fact that his team pays attention to new technological trends for him to incorporate into his business model.
